Maybe you know about his Dr jekill and Mr Hide profile. He called himself " GAINSBARRE" at the last period of is life. He describes this behavior on Ecce Homo song. "Gainsbarre" was a drunk, sex perv version of "Gainsbourg" ( which is more talented, poetic, romantic part of the man).
He was perfectly aware of becoming someone else with alcool.
It was clearly Gainsbarre with Whitney.

First of all, to Jess:

THANK YOU JESS!!! WOW! I can't wait to dig into this stuff!

Secondly, to Bigdan:

Thank you for that insight, Bigdan. While I was aware of his song "Doctor Jekyll et Monsieur Hyde," I've not yet seen a translated version of it. So . . . Gainsbarre is Gainsbourg's "Mr. Hyde," eh? That's extremely interesting and just increases my desire to learn more about him. Are there any biographies about him (written or translated into English) that would be worthwhile to read?

The best ever written is the Gilles Verlant 'one. But unfortunatly it's only in french.
Here is what seems to be the only english bio :

Much thanks Bigdan.

I just finished watching the movie that Jess provided the link to: "Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life." I noticed that it was being shown at a University's theatre in St. Louis as part of their film society series. There were about 10 people in the audience, but I was delighted to see it on the big screen. It was a very interesting movie. I noticed that there were references to him as "Gainsbarre" toward the end of the movie. I'm glad I had your explanation of that name before seeing it! I just got back from the movie and immediately ordered the book you provided a link to (although I ordered it from the US Amazon website rather than Amazon.fr). I love the title of the book: "Serge Gainsbourg: A Fistful of Gitanes." Gitanes were, of course, prominently on display and being smoked throughout the movie! Now I want to go to a tobacco shop in town and get me some! (you have to buy Gitanes in specialty tobacco shops in the US . . . they're generally not sold in your average convenience shops or grocery stores . . . at least not in St. Louis!).

So anyhow, thanks for making the book suggestion, Bigdan. I'll let you know how I like it! Very Happy

Serge Gainsbourg D'autres Nouvelles Des Etoiles

Serge Gainsbourg: D'Autres Nouvelles d'Etoiles caters to hardcore fans of French chanteur Gainsbourg by compiling nearly five hours worth of performance footage of the artist in concert. The film's producers culled the footage from a myriad of sources, including archival concert clips, television appearances and movies; they also work in candid interviews with Gainsbourg filmed between 1965 and 1982; the long-unseen video for the controversial 1971 recording Histoire de Melody Nelson; duets with such artists as Jane Birkin, Brigitte Bardot and Anna Karina; a movie trailer for the 1986 Gainsbourg-directed feature Charlotte Forever, and much, much more. All presented chronologically by decade and year, and fully digitally remastered. 2 Disc DVD Released date: April 24, 2006

There are a great many things that I do not understand about Serge Gainsbourg. One of those things would have to be Evguénie Solokov.

I have almost completed a thorogh and chronological study of Serge, and I'm up to 1981's Mauvaises Nouvelles Des Étoiles. Two primary albums to go. I've not wanted to comment on this thread until I got all the way through his stuff, but I couldn't help it when I heard this. Yes, I know it's related to the novel he wrote that revolved around the same subject matter. But . . . SERIOUSLY?!?!?! The first couple of times I heard this I thought "You have GOT to be kidding me! This is a French icon??! This is a man who had Bridgette Bardot & Jane Birkin in the palm of his hands? LOL!!" After several listenings, however, I must confess I think it is absolutely hilarious! I played it while having dinner with my 6 year old daughter tonight and she laughed so hard she couldn't keep her food down! "Play it again Daddy!" she insisted after it had finished!

Well, that sure was, um, entertaining! I was totally unaware of this "song" up till now. So, are you telling me SG wrote a fart novel? I know less about the great man than I thought.

Oh, Clouseau, btw...not being funny or anything...but it's BRIGITTE Bardot, not Bridgette! Coooooome on dude! Respect the icons! Funky Kettle

Yes . . . he wrote a novel about a guy who farts a lot. Evguénie Sokolov, according to Sylvie Simmons autobiography about Serge entitled "A Fistful of Gitanes" wrote: "is an erudite, tragi-comic tale of how a young man transcends suffering - in this case violent intestinal gas - by harnessing it to art and becoming in the process a huge success. Being Serge, it operates on a number of levels: an exposure of the often vile depths from which exquisite art can be created, an examination of the duality of the human condition (a la Vu De L'Exterieur), and an astute comment on fame and how successful artists are adulated for producing, quite literally sometimes, shit."

Laughing Laughing Laughing

And I am VERY sorry about spelling Bardot's first name wrong! I am very embarassed! Embarassed In my defense, my attention quite naturally shifts to her PHOTO and away from her NAME whenever I come across her online. I suppose this also explains why I've never been able to properly spell Briteney Speers, Christina Agulera, Carman Elecktra, Mileen Farmer, etc., etc. Wink

Btw, the correct spelling is actually: Christina's A Gorilla.

I just saw another relatively recent picture of XXL-tina. Sad what has happened to her. She used to be so slim and lovely. Sad

Whoa! So I'm minding my own business, watching Britney judging the X Factor and there's a commercial break so I run up to fix a sandwich (ham & cheese) and all of a sudden I hear a SERGE GAINSBOURG song coming out of my very American TV ("Je T'Aime, Moi Non Plus") and I say to myself "NO FRICKIN" WAY!" and so I run back downstairs with the loaf of bread in my hands (I hadn't gotten very far making my ham & cheese sandwich . . . don't know why I brought the loaf of bread downstairs - it's not like I brought the ham or the cheese . . . or even a beverage for that matter. I think it was just one of those absentminded things) and I look on the TV and see NATALIE PORTMAN advertising some type of perfume with "Je T'Aime, Moi Non Plus" playing in the background! Just HAD to share!!!
